Transforming Unused Retail Space at the University of Greenwich
Client: University of Greenwich
Location: Daniel Defoe Building, SE10
Scope of Work: Installation of Opalux Dual Reflective 05 Internal Window Film
Project Background
The University of Greenwich faced an issue with an empty retail space in the Daniel Defoe building, which had become a storage area for unused and unwanted furniture. The presence of large, uncovered structural glazing exposed the space to excessive heat and glare, making it unsuitable for alternative use. Seeking a solution to improve the aesthetics and usability of the area, the university opted for a high-performance window film application.

Challenges
- The project involved installing window film on 90m² of structural glazing.
- The upper sections of the glass panels were located 4 metres from the finished floor level (FFL), requiring the use of a mobile scaffold tower to ensure safe access.
- The installation needed to be completed efficiently while minimising disruption to surrounding university operations.
Solution
To address these challenges, Opalux Dual Reflective 05 Internal Window Film was selected. This high-performance film provides excellent solar control, significantly reducing glare and heat gain while maintaining a uniform external appearance. Key benefits of the chosen film include:
- Enhanced Solar Protection: Blocks excessive heat and glare, creating a more comfortable indoor environment.
- Increased Privacy: The reflective finish improves privacy by limiting visibility from the outside while maintaining clear internal views.
- Energy Efficiency: Reduces solar heat gain, leading to lower air conditioning costs and improved energy performance.
- Aesthetic Improvement: Gives the glazing a sleek, professional appearance, enhancing the visual appeal of the space.
Execution
The installation was carefully planned to ensure precision and efficiency. A mobile scaffold tower was deployed to safely access the higher glazing panels, allowing the film to be applied seamlessly across the full height of the glass. The team worked efficiently to complete the project within the designated timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to university activities.
Results
Following the installation, the previously under-utilised retail space saw an immediate transformation:
- The temperature and glare levels were significantly reduced, making the space more comfortable for potential use.
- The improved privacy and aesthetics enhanced the overall look of the building's interior and exterior.
- The project successfully met the client's needs, helping to create a more functional and visually appealing environment.
Conclusion
By applying Opalux Dual Reflective 05 Internal Window Film, the University of Greenwich was able to effectively repurpose an underused retail space. The successful completion of this project demonstrates the impact of high-performance window films in enhancing both aesthetic and functional aspects of a built environment.
